Keisha Has The Receipts

Keisha has screenshotted every family group chat since 2016, and tonight she is reading them out loud from the top of the picnic table.

Exhibit A: Darnell, March, asking if anybody knew “how lottery taxes work, asking for a friend.” Exhibit B: Tre, last week, sending Mama a picture of her own fridge “to see if she needs groceries.” Exhibit C: cousin Bianca, who was not invited, sending the address of the cookout to a number saved as “Do Not Answer.”

Everybody starts yelling at once. Bianca starts crying. Darnell starts sweating. The deacon starts eating his own casserole.

Then Mama Pearl’s phone buzzes. A text from an unknown number, a photo of the ticket, held up next to today’s newspaper, and one line underneath:

“Happy birthday, Pearl. You want it back? Tell them the truth about 1989.”
